Sam Hodges

Volunteer Role: Guest Speaker

Sam has been back to campus as a guest speaker for the Linguistics Department in 2014 and also spoke at an event in London in 2015 for Lancaster graduates who are working in London and looking for further careers advice at various stages in their career.

Introducing our Volunteer

After graduating in 1999, Sam's first job was as a press assistant in the BBC Birmingham Press Office.  From there he moved to London, working on a variety of entertainment shows, including launching the first two series of Strictly Come Dancing.  After four years at Television Centre, Hodges left for roles at ITV and Channel 4, before returning to the BBC as Head of Communications for BBC One in 2010. In 2011 he was made Head of Communications for BBC Television, a role he left earlier last year to take up his current position, leading communications for Twitter in the UK.  Sam lives in Greenwich with his wife Vicki and five-year-old twins, Izzy and Feebs.

Lancaster Memory

Sam confesses to having spent too much time in the Sugar House and the Carlton, but can’t be too hard on himself as it was at the Sugar House where he met his wife Vicki!

Why Volunteer and what are the benefits?

Sam enjoyed returning to campus to talk and has reconnected with the University having established a very successful career in communications. He says “I am massively aware that Lancaster University gave me the confidence to do all the things that I have done” and, as a result, he is happy to share his experiences with students who are about to embark on the next stage of their lives.
