The Faculty was ranked 58th for Arts & Humanities in the World and 91st for Social Sciences in the 2016-17 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings.
In the latest Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014), a number of subjects are ranked in the top ten in the UK:
Politics, Philosophy and Religious Studies (PPR) (submitted to Theology and Religious Studies) was 3rd overall on actual grade point average (GPA), including an outstanding 1st on Impact and 2nd on Environment. It was also ranked 1st overall on intensity-weighted GPA. Sociology was 4th overall in actual GPA, 2nd on Impact, 6th on Outputs and 6th on Environment. It too was ranked 1st overall on intensity-weighted GPA. English, Creative Writing, Linguistics and European Languages and Cultures gained a 3rd on Environment and 7th on Impact. Lancaster Institute for Contemporary Arts - 7th on Environment and 7th on high intensity-weighted ranking. Education Research - 6th on high intensity-weighted ranking.

Top 20 subjects in the UK Complete University Guide 2017 include: English (11th); History (12th); Sociology (13th); German (14th); and Law (20th).
Lancaster University was ranked 8th nationally, 4th for Sociology, 5th for Drama and Dance, 7th for History, 10th for Religious Studies and Theology, 11th for Media and Film and 13th for Modern Languages & Linguistics by the Guardian University Guide 2017.
1st for Communication and Media Studies
The Times/Sunday Times Good University Guide 2016 ranked Lancaster University joint 11th nationally and first in the Northwest. Communication and Media Studies was ranked 1st, Social Work 2nd, Linguistics 4th, Creative Writing 4th, Sociology 5th, French 6th, Iberian Languages 6th, Philosophy 7th, Art and Design 7th, Drama Dance & Cinematics 10th and English 13th in the subject guides.
