Lancaster’s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences is consistently ranked among the world’s leading Arts & Humanities and Social Sciences faculties and is home to over 20 disciplines, many ranking in the top 10 in the UK.
The Times and Sunday Times University of the Year
Lancaster University has been named University of the Year in the 2018 Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide and has risen to 6th place overall.
Criminology is ranked number one in the UK and 13 other Arts and Social Sciences subjects are ranked in the top ten. Drama Dance & Cinematics is placed 2nd, Social Work 2nd, French 2nd, German 2nd, Linguistics 3rd, Art and Design 3rd, Theology & Religious Studies 3rd, Creative Writing 3rd, Iberian Languages 3rd, Communication and Media Studies 5th, Philosophy 5th, History 7th and Politics 8th.
QS World Rankings by Subject
Three departments have subjects in the world top 50 making a total of five in the top 100, according to the 2017 QS World University Rankings by Subject.
Linguistics rank 19th, Religious Studies 34th and Sociology 46th. Art and Design and English Language and Literature are also in the top 100 while Arts and Humanities overall at Lancaster have stepped up six places to 110 in the world.

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences is among the best in the world, with 4 subject areas featuring in the top 100 in World in the 2017-18 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings.

In the latest Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014), a number of subjects are ranked in the top ten in the UK:
Politics, Philosophy and Religious Studies (PPR) (submitted to Theology and Religious Studies) was 3rd overall on actual grade point average (GPA), including an outstanding 1st on Impact and 2nd on Environment. It was also ranked 1st overall on intensity-weighted GPA. Sociology was 4th overall in actual GPA, 2nd on Impact, 6th on Outputs and 6th on Environment. It too was ranked 1st overall on intensity-weighted GPA. English, Creative Writing, Linguistics and European Languages and Cultures gained a 3rd on Environment and 7th on Impact. Lancaster Institute for Contemporary Arts - 7th on Environment and 7th on high intensity-weighted ranking. Education Research - 6th on high intensity-weighted ranking.

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences has nine subjects in the top ten including 1st for Theatre and Film. Lancaster is 2nd for Social Work, 4th for Creative Writing, 5th for Communication and Media Studies, 6th for Religious Studies, 8th for German, 8th for Linguistics, and 10th for Politics. A further eight subjects are in the top 20 including Italian, Philosophy, History, Art, Design, English, French, and Spanish (Iberian Studies).

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences has several subjects in the top ten including Social Work in 3rd place, History which is ranked 5th and Criminology 6th. Also in the top ten are Theatre (Drama and Dance) which is placed 7th, Media and Film Studies which is in 8th position and Sociology also in 8th position. A number of other FASS subjects are in the top 20 including Art and Design, English and Creative Writing, Modern Languages and Linguistics, and Religious Studies.
