Postgraduates in the department hosted 'Histfest' on 10-11 May. A celebrated tradition at Lancaster, beginning in 1996, Histfest was developed as a history conference organised by postgraduates for postgraduates. Funded this year by the Royal Historical Society, the event attracted twenty-three speakers from thirteen institutions, including Oxford, King's College London, Manchester, St Andrews, Queen's University Belfast, and Glasgow, as well as several papers from Lancaster postgraduates. Papers covered topics as diverse as the Muslims of Sicily during the Norman period to perceptions of poverty and the 'underclass' in Thatcher's Britain.
