What Will You Study
This online course is designed for working professionals who wish to increase their understanding and knowledge of social justice and education, however it will also be of interest to those with an academic interest in the subject. People from different backgrounds and in different professions join the course from around the world. You will work with our expert tutors and interact with other students entirely online to explore a range of social justice issues.
The programme provides a thorough introduction to issues in social justice research, a solid grounding in research methods and writing skills, and extended opportunities from early in the programme to work with an academic supervisor. From the start of the programme you will be encouraged to engage with fundamental issues such as how education systems reproduce existing inequalities or might challenge them. Our aim is to stimulate and challenge, and to go beyond everyday common sense while also drawing on your experiences to keep the discussions grounded in concrete practices.
The programme provides an opportunity to take an elective module on a specialised topic. Examples of specialised modules include: Cultures, Globalisation and Education; and Policies, Ideologies and Interventions in Education. This is an opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge of a topic that is of particular relevance to your personal interests and career, and this could inform the topic of your research dissertation.
The MA in Education and Social Justice is a course with a strong research ethos. It will be of interest to anyone who wishes to gain research expertise as well as develop knowledge of social justice issues. Such research experience will be particularly useful for students who wish to learn how to intervene in education systems to promote social justice, and for those who wish to develop research-led policy agendas in their own institutions.
The programme is designed so that you can study entirely from home and whilst in full- or part-time employment, and the course structure will enable you to work around own schedule. Previous students include teachers, social workers, policy-makers, and those working in a variety of career areas in education focussed institutions. The course is also taken by graduates with an academic interest in education and social justice issues, and those who would like to develop skills and expertise to pursue a career in this area, including an academic research career. It can provide a route to our highly successful PhD programme in Education and Social Justice.
