Careers and Professional Development

Postgraduate research students who join us will find an intellectually stimulating, interdisciplinary and international environment for their research activities working alongside academics whose world leading research underpins their teaching.

Many PhD students seek academic careers after their studies and others join professional research organisations; some join consulting firms and others go on to work for a broad range of national and international employers. Wherever your PhD takes you, the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Lancaster University is committed to supporting students with their transition.

A careers service that understands PhD students

PhD students have access to the Faculty's Research Training Programme, which provides a wide range of short-courses and modules to embed the necessary research skills to complete their research projects successfully and many of these modules are available on-line for distance learning students.

FASS has a dedicated team of Careers Consultants who work in partnership with our departments to offer advice and support relevant to the current stage of students' developing career plans and academic study. You can book an appointment to see one of our Consultants via Target Connect and don’t worry if you are not on campus, as appointments can also be made for Skype or telephone interviews.

The Careers Service provides a range of careers information specially designed to meet the need of PhD students including research on the destinations of PhD students, the job market for researchers, careers information, application procedures and vacancy sources. Careers also offer a range of workshops which are tailored to the needs of PhD students including:

  • Academic Interviews
  • Career planning for PhD students
  • Employer Interviews & Assessment Centres
  • Writing an Effective Academic CV

Connecting you to employers

Undertaking a work placement can provide PhD students with ‘real world’ experiences which complement their academic learning. The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Placement Scheme provides work experience opportunities in a number of sectors and roles and we actively encourage postgraduate students to take advantage of them.
