About the survey

The annual  Destination of Leavers from Higher Education survey is a national survey conducted on behalf of the Higher Education Statistic Agency (HESA) of all recent graduates from UK universities or HE colleges.

The survey we are asking you to take part in is a national survey of everyone who has recently qualified from any university or HE college in the UK. The information you provide will also be very useful to us at Lancaster University to advise our current students about the opportunities that might be available to them.

If we don’t hear from you we will try to contact you again, possibly by phone, so please let us know if you change your email address or phone number. If we can’t get in touch with you at all, we may try to get information about what you were doing from someone else, either at the university or someone we can reach using the contact information you have previously provided. If you don’t want us to do this, or you don’t want to give us any information at all, please tell us. Below are details about what happens to your information after it is sent to us.

A follow-up survey is planned for three years’ time so that we can get even more information about the early careers of those with HE qualifications. You might be asked to take part in this follow-up survey as well, which will be carried out by a different organisation. The current survey may also be audited – that is, checked to make sure it has been carried out correctly. If you don’t want to take part in the follow-up survey, or to be contacted during an audit, please let us know. You can also let us know that you do not want to take part in the follow-up survey by ticking the box at the end of the questionnaire.

What happens to your information

The data we collect is invaluable to the University in both reviewing the content and promoting courses, together with informing staff and students regarding the graduate employment market and helping students to understand their career options.
The data you supply will be:

  • Incorporated into course destination lists, plus the institutional reports on the first destinations of students who completed their courses successfully. This enables academic staff to review the employment outcomes of their students and revise course content for the future. It also provides existing and potential students with an insight into possible first career destinations. Both the course destination lists and the institutional reports will be published in an anonymous format and will not contain any reference that would enable you to be identified as an individual.
  • Anonymised data and resulting statistics may be supplied to relevant staff of Lancaster University, and external professional bodies where relevant for the purpose of providing information about Lancaster University graduate destinations and informing further research into graduate labour market trends.
  • Your details will be used by Lancaster University Careers and the Alumni Office to send you updates from the University (eg alumni event invitations, STEPS magazine etc) along with periodic promotional emails and market research. We may contact you by email, phone or mail. If you wish to opt-out of any form of communication from Lancaster University’s alumni office, you can notify us by emailing alumni@lancaster.ac.uk The information you provide may also be used within the university to inform provision and development of the institution.

On occasion, we may request your help with research into longer-term career patterns. Up to date details about how your career is progressing are helpful for course review and planning purposes, and for producing careers information that will help existing and potential students. However, you are under no obligation whatsoever to participate in such surveys.

In accordance with our statutory requirements, the data supplied for you shall be held by Lancaster University Careers for three years in paper format. After this period, the information shall be destroyed in a secure, approved manner. It will also be held electronically on the University’s student information system and the alumni database and held in accordance with our privacy policy ( and used for the purposes outlined above.

If you would prefer that we do not contact you or if you have any concerns about the use of your information for this survey, please contact Diane Richardson, Quality & Information Manager, by writing to Careers, University House, Lancaster University, Lancaster LA1 4YW or by telephoning 01524 592866, or by e-mail.
