First Year Insight Days & Programmes
Insight days and programmes offer first year students the opportunity to enter the workplace and gain valuable experience prior to being eligible for most internship programmes.
There are several internship programmes for first year students, but the majority are reserved for those in their penultimate year of study. Often, employers use internships to identify future graduates who would be successful in the organisation/ industry. Insight days and programmes give you the opportunity to think about whether this is the right sector for you and make a great impression to be considered for the internship programme. You can make valuable connections and use it as a fantastic networking opportunity.
Insight programmes tend to take place in the Easter break and can be between 1-14 days depending on your area of interest. TeachFirst, for example, offers a two week programme. Programmes are available in most sectors, and often involve work shadowing and you will likely receive mentoring from an industry expert.
The schemes are popular so it is important to understand your deadlines. The majority of deadlines will be before the Christmas break so plan your applications accordingly so you don’t miss out.
If you are interested in working for a particular organisation, it is useful to follow the company on social media including Twitter and Facebook to be kept up to date on deadlines.
It is recommended that you approach companies speculatively to gain an insight or some work shadowing, especially for those sectors which may be unable to afford to run a formal insight programme.
