Cemore Away Day: Play 18th July 2017

This year’s Cemore Away Day plays with play. To explore ways of ‘staying with the troubles’ of changing mobilities and disruptive socio-technical innovation, we have long used and developed mobile methods and methodologies. These involve ‘moving into’ others’ contexts, moving along with others and allowing oneself to be moved by the encounters. Sometimes this inspires in(ter)vention. Putting ‘play’ into this mix of public sociology and design research through methods like design fictions, board games, prototyping, experimenting and other ways is proving highly productive. On this away day, we would like to play with play.

We have some games already lined up, including:

isITethical? This is a board game that plays with ethical impact assessment (EIA) as a way of addressing ethical, legal and social issues (ELSI) in the datafication of everyday life through a focus on disaster risk management. The game engages players in building future worlds in which datafication is real and where ELSI can be explored and addressed critically, pro-actively and creatively.

CUIDAR Games – Flood Snakes and Ladders –  a game of chance using material collected from our work with flood affected adults.

If you have any questions regarding the day or have a game you’d like to bring or play, please contact Aurora Trujillo: a.trujillo@lancaster.ac.uk
