Research Project: Situated Composition

My current research investigates what I am calling ‘situated composition’, referring to new possibilities for people with widely varying levels of expertise to carry out sound production in an unprecedented range of environments due to the growing accessibility and mobility of digital sound tools, particularly those made available through mobile apps. Situated composition also operates as a conceptual approach, drawing attention to the conditions that inform sound practices, and taking ‘composition’ as the mixture of material, social, virtual, and digital elements that act as co-composers of one another. This project blends research and creative practice.
