Bolton NHS Foundation Trust - Leadership Programme

'A Good Day at Work'

Bolton NHS Foundation Trust reviewed its leadership development strategy and identified leadership development needs of band 7 and 8 nurses, AHPs and managers. Working in collaboration with the Trust, CETAD ran an innovative 9 month development programme for Clinical Leaders, entitled ‘A Good Day at Work’. A total of 24 clinical and AHP leads successfully completed the programme in October 2016.

The aim of the programme was engaging thinking about the expectations and needs of effective leaders and their teams, to consider how to maintain their wellbeing, and to stretch the participants to apply their learning in real work-based practice to address current organisational issues.

The programme focused on developing key skills: resilience, mindfulness, coaching and communication skills within a framework of transformational and inspirational leadership, bearing in mind the key concepts of care and compassion. This would enable them to engage with and improve the performance of their teams to help everyone to have a Good Day at Work.

To demonstrate ownership and accountability in addressing current organisational issues, participants each developed and delivered a work-based project during the programme. Examples of projects include:

  • Development of an SBAR for expected neonatal admissions
  • Hospital discharges
  • Improving communication between community-based paediatric teams
  • Transfer of cardioversion list from Pacing Suite/CCU to Day Care Unit
  • Skyguard project

The programme proved successful in prompting leaders to take responsibility for leading their teams through change, whilst showing compassion to themselves and their teams. The valuable learning that emerged will continue with facilitation of action-learning by the OD team. A second cohort of participants is being recruited.

“Since we have started working with CETAD, we have been impressed by the knowledge and expertise they have brought with their thinking and support for us to ensure provision of a high quality programme to our clinical leaders to impact upon their workplace.”
