University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust - Organisational Learning and Knowledge Management
Our partnership working with University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay dates back to 2001; we first worked in partnership on a mentoring scheme and more recently on a programme to support organisational learning and knowledge management.
From the outset, they asked us to lead and guide them in terms of best practice but in a collaborative way. Morecambe Bay cited us as being "responsive and sensitive, extremely flexible in our approach working in a developmental way rather than prescriptive way” as we worked together to shape the mentoring scheme. When they wanted to develop a programme to support organisational learning they again approached CETAD. The result was a postgraduate programme for staff across disciplines at varying levels. It aims to support an organisation's Knowledge Management strategy by developing participants' awareness, knowledge, understanding and skills in organisational learning, with an emphasis on application in practice. A theme running through the programme is how to manage knowledge, not only at the team level, but across the organisation as a whole in order to maximise organisational benefits. The aim is to initiate a 'learning community' of practitioners across all disciplines, committed to their own development, to the development of colleagues and to the learning of the organisation.
The group on the initial pilot programme looked at gaining accreditation for collaborative learning projects and they presented their ideas to senior management colleagues. Their presentation demonstrated particular interest in focusing on tacit knowledge within the Trust and looking at patient and staff experience. Roger Wilson Chief Knowledge Officer and Director of Human Resources and Organisational Development, described the presentation as "very thought provoking, engaging and massively encouraging".
