About Us

We are a modern and ambitious chemistry department offering amongst the very best in teaching and facilities in the UK.  Since our inception in 2012 we have invested over £26 million in your learning environment and recruited world-leading academic staff who match our ambitions.

Though we are a young department, we ranked 10th in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) for research quality which reflects the passion and dedication of our staff.  We believe in being at the forefront of both fundamental and contemporary chemistry research which not only underpins the content of the subjects we teach, it also encourages a new generation of chemists who are an integral part of our community.

Our ethos

At Lancaster you won’t get lost in large lecture theatres with hundreds of other students. We offer small class sizes and an open door policy so that you really get to know your teachers and fellow students and feel that you can approach us at any time for support.  We believe this fosters a productive learning environment which helps you to achieve your potential.

As a modern department, we strongly believe that chemistry should be taught as an integrated subject and not divided along inorganic, organic and physical chemistry boundaries.  This represents the realities of modern chemistry research and best prepares you for the real world.

Teaching and research

We have attracted a diverse and expanding team of research-active staff from top universities, who are leaders in their fields. We share a commitment to excellence in teaching as well as research. Our staff consists of both new lecturers and experienced academics, creating a vibrant community of which our students are an essential and integral part. They have a variety of research backgrounds and thus have interests spanning many areas of both fundamental and contemporary chemistry. Perhaps most importantly, they share common ground in research-excellence, an inclusive and collaborative spirit, and a dedication to passing on their knowledge and passion for chemistry to a new generation of researchers.

The environment

We have invested over £26 million in your learning environment to provide modern, well-equipped facilities including an impressive range of instrumentation and equipment to support our ambitious teaching programme and research activities, and of course, some space to socialise!
