A day at Lancaster University giving students the opportunity to tour the Department, experience a lecture in current research provided by an academic, complete a lab-based activity and analyse chemicals.
Organic synthesis and analysis
Students will first carry out an experiment in the laboratory. Working with Alka Seltzers, they will isolate and purify a product from the tablet. From here, students will use the University's state-of-the-art analytical instruments to perform various tests to identify their product and any impurities. These tests can include infrared (IR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).
Students will work in the laboratory to carry out fingerprint analysis, from crude methods to polymer fuming. They will then investigate the mechanism behind the polymerisation process and examine alternative methods of analysis such as the scanning electron microscope (SEM).
In addition, sessions can be arranged if there is something specific you wish to use our facilities for, e.g. the manufacture of aspirin. These can be tailored to your specific requirements.
