How to Apply
Funded PhD studentships are advertised here and on the Department homepage when available. Typically, informal enquiries to the relevant member of staff are encouraged before making a formal application via the Lancaster University online application system.
When applying via the online application system, please state clearly the title of the PhD studentship you are applying for and the name of the proposed supervisor. If this is not included with the application, applicants will need to be contacted to provide this information, which will delay your application. Make sure to tailor your application to the studentship you are applying for—general applications making no reference to the studentship itself may not be considered.
Typically, studentships are allocated through a competitive process; applications will be considered in the order that they are received and the position will be considered filled when a suitable candidate has been identified. Restrictions beyond those listed in the entry requirements may apply to specific PhDs, based on the requirements of the funding source. For example, they may only be open to Home/EU students.
This should be considered as the definitive source of currently available funded studentships. Potential candidates who are interested in undertaking a PhD with a supervisor who does not currently have a funded studentship are advised to contact the prospective supervisor directly do not make a speculative application through the University applications page.
For those with their own funding, please contact the relevant member of staff directly. Before we are able to officially offer you a place, you will need to make a formal application via the Lancaster University online application system.
It is important when making an application that you make clear which member of staff you have been in contact with. If this information is not included in your application, then we will need to contact you, which will delay your application.
