Solid State NMR

The Department has a broad range of modern solid state NMR instrumentation, including the joint second highest field wide-bore instrument in the UK and a wide range of probes.

Both solid state instruments are located in A76, with access via the A75 preparation room. Access is restricted to approved users only. The magnets are refilled with liquid nitrogen on Mondays, and the with liquid helium approximately every three months. If you wish to request time on these instruments, contact Dr John Griffin - they are generally booked one month in advance.

Bruker AVANCE III HD 700 WB

  • UltraShieldPlus wide-bore (89 mm) 16.4 T magnet
  • 1H/19F amplifier: 1 kW

Several probes are available, including a 1H-optimised liquids option:

  • 2.5 mm CP/MAS HXY - up to 35 kHz MAS, -70 - +80 °C
  • 3.2 mm CP/MAS HXY - up to 24 kHz, -140 - +150 °C
  • 4 mm CP/MAS HX (109Ag-13C, "low gamma") - up to 15 kHz, -140 - +150 °C
  • Flat coil 1H/13C/15N triple resonance - -80 - +80 °C
  • Liquids 5 mm TXI (1H, 13C, 15N) inverse triple resonance probe, with accompanying 2H lock, gradient and BOSS-II shim systems - -150 - +150 °C)

  • 4 mm HXY -  up to 15 kHz MAS
  • 7 mm HX (109Ag-13C) CP/MAS - up to 7 kHz MAS, -140 - +150 °C
  • 7 mm low gamma -  up to 7 kHz MAS

Also available is a Tektronix TDS 3052 oscilloscope (500 MHz maximum).
