This is certainly a grand day out. Visiting Durham first, with its “light festival” which will have many activities and events organised. Not forgetting of course the beautiful and striking Cathedral, which is free to enter and has some amazing views from the tower. The little cobbled streets and “Oxbridge” overtones gives evidence to its academic and of course its religious history, as well as some great shopping. From there we go to Bowes, an elegant French Chateau in the middle of County Durham, with its wonderful art collection, amazing gardens and of course its atmosphere. A few minutes away we finish at Barnard Castle, the dominant fortress over the town of the same name. Chance to walk the wall, and go back a few hundred years. The town is attractive with coffee shops and enchanting scenery. Not to be missed. Buy early!
