Graduate College can accommodate over 900 postgraduate students with a variety of room types to choose from, many of the rooms have views of the surrounding countryside.
Most accommodation in the Graduate College is arranged in flats of between 5 and 9 students sharing a kitchen, you can choose to share the facilities in a standard flat or have a private bathroom in an ensuite flat. All students share a kitchen unless you stay in a self contained studio; facilities in the kitchen are oven, hob, fridge, freezer, toaster and kettle. You will need to provide your own cooking equipment.
If you live in Graduate College residences it is university managed accommodation as such your residence charges are inclusive of heating, lighting, electricity, a 24-hour security presence during term time and maintained of the room. Internet access is also included, giving you access to the University network and high speed Internet.
This room is a flexible working/relaxing space intended to be used for group work, preparation of talks, reading etc. It is an alcohol free space, open 24 hours a day. You will require your University Library card to gain access.
There are some coin-operated lockers to this room to enable off-campus students to leave items they do not wish to carry around all day. They require a £1 coin which is returned when you return the key and remove your possessions (like at the gym).
There are also kitchen facilities with an oven, hob, microwave, hot water boiler etc. where you can make hot drinks and food 24 hours a day… very useful if you have been out in the cold or wet!
There are a selection of board games and books (academic and non-academic) for students to use.
PhD Study Room
This room contains two networked PCs and is intended to be used by off-campus PhD students who do not have access to quiet, private study space in their departments for whatever reason. Please contact the college to book a desk.
This room contains a pool table, a dart board, table tennis table, a seating area and some snack vending machines. The College pool teams have priority use of pool table on match days after 5pm for their inter-college matches – contact the PGBoard for more information on inter-college sports. The games room is generally open from 7am until midnight each day and you will require your University library card to gain access.
This is a small room containing a shower, toilet, small storage lockers, a kettle and a microwave. We are hoping to add more facilities to this room in the future for all students who live off campus. To get a key for this room, you need to see the College Administrator and leave a deposit of £10 which will be returned when you return the key.
The TV room is open 24 hours for postgraduates to use. It does not have any satellite channels – only domestic UK digital TV. Sporting events on satellite TV are available in the bar – speak to Gareth for more information. The TV room can also be used as a meeting area when the common room is full or more privacy is required, but its primary use is for watching TV.
The Graduate College Computer Room, maintained by ISS, is available to all postgraduate students (resident and non resident). It is equipped with 25 networked PCs and is open 24hrs a day. One area is for quiet study and you should try and keep conversations to a minimum. To gain access you will need your university library card. There are two mono laser printers and one colour laser printer.
