Grizedale College

Student Welfare

We have a number of people who are responsible for the welfare of college members.

We have an advisor system, where an advisor is allocated to a flat of new students. Your advisor will get to know you and will be a first point of call if you are struggling with your academic work and would like them to intercede on your behalf with the university. The advisors come from all walks of university life and are mostly staff, they try to be available when needed but mainly within normal working hours. Carolyn Hayes is the Senior Advisor and coordinates the team.

If you just want a chat or would like to talk confidentially with someone sympathetic then call in and meet with Barbara. She is always happy to meet people and will gladly stop wrangling with the latest version of the university's accounts program, if you give her the slightest excuse.

If you would like to discuss anything related to your residence, then Karen is the Lady to see, she also, lives in the main admin block, next to the bar.

If you would like to talk about more serious problems or would like to deal with someone outside the college system, the University has a counselling network, a student services department and a chaplaincy centre where members of a wide range of faiths are happy to lend support where it is needed.

Nightline is an anonymous telephone and email based system where you can talk to someone, in a similar way to the samaritans.

We understand that it may be your first time away from home, perhaps even in a foreign country and it may be difficult to fit in. Please don't bottle up your feelings, just come and talk to someone in the office. The porters are on 24 hours a day and are happy to talk to you anytime.
