Ruskin Library

Ruskin Research

The Ruskin Library is situated on the campus of Lancaster University, just south of the city of Lancaster. It is easily reached by bus or car - the bus stop and car parking are both close to the Ruskin Library; taxis are available at the station for those travelling by rail, and there is also a cyclepath/footpath from the centre of Lancaster.

Directions for getting to campus can be found here.

An accessible route map of the University Campus is available here. Full access is available for wheelchair users to the Ruskin Library using a combination of ramps and stair lifts. All public areas within the building are accessible. Some visitors may find it difficult to open the main doors into the building - the Ruskin Library main entrance is an architectural feature, and we have been unable to make provision for disabled access. There is a bell to attract the attention of staff who will be happy to assist.

Accessible lavatory facilities are available inside the Library building on the ground floor.

Large print guides are available at Reception.

We have a small shop area at the reception desk, with a wide range of greetings cards and exhibition catalogues. Catalogues are also available from our online store.

An activity sheet is available all year round introducing children to John Ruskin and the museum collection.  Pushchairs can be left in the foyer, or stair lifts can be used to go up to the Gallery space. Baby changing facilities are available at the Chaplaincy Centre.

Non flash photography is allowed for personal use. Visitors are required to complete a form at reception before taking pictures. Occasionally items on loan from other Galleries will have different copyright restrictions and photography of these items will not be allowed.

Eating out

A wide range of catering outlets are available on campus - the most convenient for the Ruskin Library are The Deli and Costa Coffee. There are also a number of takeaways nearby including Greggs bakers, Subway, Wallings ice-cream parlour and Juicafe (juice and smoothies). On Thursdays during term time there is a small market in Alexandra Square, with a number of food outlets.

Other facilities

Campus has two banks (and many cash machines), a post office, a supermarket, a hairdresser, a travel agent, a newsagents, a bookshop and a charity shop. There is also a new Sports Centre at the entrance to campus , and the Peter Scott Gallery which has a permanent exhititon of Royal Lancastrian pottery, and holds regular exhibitions of contemporary art.
