Guidance on Safety Inspections Carried out by a Trade Union appointed Safety Representative

The aim of this guidance is to describe the procedure by which Safety Inspections are carried out by Trade Union appointed representatives under the Safety Representatives and Safety Committees Regulations.

Safety representatives have the legal right to inspect their workplace. The procedure for carrying out inspections and taking any subsequent remedial action is described.

Duties and Responsibilities

Role   Responsibility
Head of Department   permit inspection to take place
    rectify immediately any serious conditions identified
    complete and return the inspection report form within 2 months
     
Safety Representative   give reasonable notice of the inspection in writing to Head of Department
    report unsafe conditions to Head of Department verbally then on the inspection report form
    distribute the inspection report form
     
Area Safety Officer   be present during the inspection (recommended)
