Yvon Appleby is a senior lecturer in the Division of Education at the University of Central Lancashire, Preston. She works in a post-compulsory Initial Teacher Training partnership linking research to practice. Her research interests are the links between lives and learning and the impact of violence in literacy and learning. David Barton is Director of the Literacy Research Centre at Lancaster University. Current interests include: literacy and social justice; research methodologies, including linking research and practice; how adults learn; reading and writing on the internet, including Flickr. He is a founding member of the Research and Practice in Adult Literacy network (RaPAL). More details are available on David's webpage.
Nuala now works as a freelance learning and skills consultant, having spent a number of years teaching and managing in Further Education. She has a particular interest in teacher education and works as a moderator for the Teacher Training programmes with the Open College of the North West. Nuala also works with the QIA Skills for Life Improvement Programme supporting a whole organisation approach to Skills for Life within a range of educational providers. Alongside these activities she undertakes a range of other Skills for Life related project.
Amy Burgess is a researcher in the Literacy Research Centre at Lancaster University. Her research interests include writing; ethnographic methodologies; policy issues; and the link between time and literacy. She teaches on the MA in Adult Literacy, Numeracy and ESOL at Lancaster and is currently Chair of RaPAL. She previously taught adult literacy for 10 years in a variety of settings in and around Bristol.
Vicky Duckworth is a senior lecturer and course leader for the full-time PCET at Edge Hill University, Ormskirk, Lancashire. She works in post-compulsory Initial Teacher Training both at the university and at the partnership colleges. Her research interests include education, empowerment and social justice. Vicky is currently North West Convenor for the Learning and Skills Research Network and a member of Write About.
Anne is currently a Regional Coordinator for the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics in both the NW and Yorkshire and the Humber regions. She previously taught mathematics for 30 years and, whilst she has worked in pre-school, primary and secondary schools, her work has predominantly been in FE and mostly with adult returners of all levels. Mary Hamilton is Professor of Adult Learning and Literacy in the Department of Educational Research at Lancaster University, England and Associate Director of the Lancaster Literacy Research Centre. She is interested especially in informal adult learning, literacy policy and change. She is a founding member of the Research and Practice in Adult Literacy network (RaPAL). Marie Kerwin is the NW NIACE (National Institute of Adult Continuing Education) Programme Director. NIACE works in the NW to advocate for more, different and better learning opportunities for adults, co-ordinating Adult Learners’ Week and supporting regional celebrations of learning. Marie works closely with regional strategic agencies, funding bodies, other regional organisations and local learning providers. She runs a number of networks in the region as well as being an active member of Dialogue NW.
Meriel Lobley originally taught in primary and secondary in London. With ‘On the Move’ her involvement with adult literacy began. Moving to Lancaster in 1982 her work continued teaching literacy and training tutors and volunteers in adult education, including the local prison. She soon linked up with Lancaster University’s RaPAL group and continues to enjoy linking research to practice, working as a consultant in the North West.
Sue McCulloch worked for many years in FE, teaching literacy, managing learning programmes, training staff and running projects with partners from across the LLN sector. After leaving FE, she worked as a consultant on a variety of LLN-related projects. Now retired, Sue maintains a keen interest in the LLN field, in particular, how practitioners may link research and practice.
Mary Osmaston has been involved in ESOL teaching and Skills for Life teacher education for many years, in the secondary schools sector as well as in further and higher education, in the UK and abroad. She now works in Teacher Education at the University of Central Lancashire, coordinating the Skills for Life teaching qualifications and working with the Cert Ed and PGCE teams in colleges across the North West. She is particularly interested in the ways that different teaching methods affect learning, especially in how ESOL learners develop good grammatical competence, and in how feedback on their teaching influences trainees' progress. Angela Porter has worked in the area of Adult Literacy for twenty five years. Her current post as a Curriculum Manager at Blackpool & the Fylde College involves supporting college tutors in embedding literacy and numeracy into their vocational programmes and providing training for Adult Literacy and Numeracy subject specialists through continuing professional development. Angela is currently involved in the development and delivery of a new, unique and exciting Lancaster University validated Foundation Degree: Literacies for Life which is part of the developing HE offer at Blackpool. Siobhan is currently working for the Lancashire Colleges Consortium as their ESF and Fusion project manager, responsible for a variety of projects including Skills for Life across Lancashire and the North West. She has been involved with Adult Education in particular Skills for Life for many years, having taught and worked with mainly adult returners in Lancashire. For four years, Sandra taught a variety of Adult Literacy courses in Cumbria including workshops, workplace and community programmes. Sandra became interested in research and, in 2007, received an ESRC 1+3 award to study for an MA and PhD within the Department of Educational Research at Lancaster University. Now in the second year of her PhD, her current research focuses on different representations of Adult Literacy learners, namely the adults’ own biographical narratives and the narratives produced through organisational paperwork.
