Business Engagement

Business Engagement

Lancaster University's Data Science Programme gives students the skills they need to make sense of the most complex commercial data. Our student placements give companies the opportunity to have our students work on a project relevant to their business.

There has never been a greater need for companies to recognise the value of their data resources and to use them strategically. Companies who make the best use of data are able to gain a competitive advantage. Our Business Engagement Manager, Dr Simon Tomlinson, was quoted in The Times as follows:

“By combining and analysing their data sources, these companies have derived insights that deliver a real competitive advantage. In our work with industry partners, we have seen companies grasping the opportunity to gain a rich understanding of their customers, identify and eliminate production line issues, and instil a culture of continuous improvement based on real evidence.”

We have worked with over 70 partner organisations to enable them to bring a data science student into their business for a 12-week placement project. The project's content is specified by the hosting company and all IP rights are assigned to the hosts. Many of our students have gone on to full-time employment with their placement hosts.

Feedback from our partners:

"Both interns were not just extremely bright, but also incredibly motivated and very quickly made a valuable contribution to the team. I am extremely pleased to say that both candidates have now accepted a permanent position with us to start after they finish the MSc. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this internship programme to anyone considering participating in it.” Fiona Johnston, Head of Analysis Products and Services, UCAS

“We were really impressed. You are clearly teaching the students very relevant skills.” Ben Wilson, The Co-operative Insurance

“We were very impressed by the quality of the students and the obvious quality of the programme.” Thomas Scott, Sky Betting and Gaming

“The calibre of students that we have interviewed at Lancaster has been top notch, and we continue to be impressed not only by their intellect, but also their ability to apply their skills to industry-grade problems, especially in a fast-paced environment like Silicon Valley.” Thomson Nguyen, CEO, Framed Data Inc.

2017/18 Programme will open in Autumn

We anticipate recruiting another large cohort of MSc students in October 2017. Each of our students will have at least a 2:1 in a relevant discipline and will be keen to build a career in data science. We shall be looking for organisations who are able to offer challenging projects that will be of benefit to themselves and will enable our students to put their skills into practice. As in previous years, we will ask our partner organisations to interview and select students, rather than assigning students ourselves, to ensure that projects will only proceed if the partner organisation feels that a suitable student has been found. We ask hosts to provide a stipend to the student equivalent to the UK minimum wage for the time spent working on the project. All IP created during the projects will be owned by the hosting organisation.

Please contact Dr Simon Tomlinson if you would like to find out more about the opportunities for Business Engagement offered by our Data Science Programme.
