Affect and desire are important motivations in academic writing. The related concept of writer's stance has mainly been applied to writers' interactional and evaluative positions in scientific texts. This presentation will focus on affect/stance expressed in talk-around-text. I will look at how affect/stance can be conceptualised within a social practice perspective on academic writing and what such a linguistic analysis might add to an understanding of these practices.
The talk is based on an ethnographically informed study of dissertation practices of 13 master's students. The data material consists of students' drafts, notes and dissertations, regular interviews with participants and rich background information. In the interviews, participants expressed stance mainly towards their topic or methodology, their discipline or other social field, and their writing. I will outline these themes through selected excerpts. The analysis highlights the dynamically shifting hierarchies of individuals' goals and desires. It identifies desires possible within dissertation practices. The value systems the writers referred to point to the interaction of various practices. The analysis thus underlines the intricate connection between self and social practice.
