Reviving the ancient virtues in the scholarship of teaching, with a slight critical twist
In this seminar I will take a look at an aspect of academic practice which we have come to refer to as the scholarship of teaching. While these days it is often understood to be an evidence-based practice I shall suggest that what is overlooked in present discourse is that it is also a virtues-based practice. Intellectual and moral virtues have an important role to play. I propose that analysing the scholarship of teaching through the lens of ‘virtue’ helps appreciate what kind of a practice the scholarship of teaching is and the challenges involved in engaging with it well.
