This part-time PhD is designed for academics, academic managers, educational developers and others from all disciplinary backgrounds working within higher or further education. It will enable you to:•acquire research skills•develop your own area of research in higher or further education•improve your publication portfolio•analyse professional practice.
Mode of study: six assessed modules and a thesis.
Module A - Research Methods (3 x 2,000 words); Module B - In-Practice Learning and Development (4 x 1000 words); Module C - Research and Reflecting on Post-Compulsory Educational Practice (3 x 2000 words). Core Module 1 - Education, Learning and Work (6-8,000 words); Core Module 2 - Learning Teaching and Assessment (6-8,000 words); Core Module 3 - Policy, Change and Organisational Development (6-8,000 words). The assessment process on the core modules is based upon the review process for refereed journal articles.
Thesis of around 45,000 words.
Tutor/peer contact: Part 1 of the programme (the first two years) involves the study of five modules (A, B, 1, 2, 3). In Part 2 (years three and four) there is a smaller taught element (module C), with most of the focus on individual research for your thesis. The taught element is delivered at Lancaster during residential periods. Additional is by email and electronic conferencing.
The fee for Cohort 15 (2010) is £2,800.The first residential for Cohort 15 is 4th - 8th January 2010.
