Teaching and programmes

Our priority is to deliver high-quality, professionally accredited programmes that are underpinned by the Conceive, Design, Implement, Operate initiative framework for engineering planning and outcomes. You will receive training, supervision and experience from our world-leading academics, whose involvement in state-of-the-art research shapes the material that we teach.

Our Department is an internationally recognised leader of research and innovation, and carries the distinction of being one of the few general engineering departments in the UK. This enables us to provide an interdisciplinary experience that is typical of what you will face in modern industry.

All of our students benefit from innovative teaching methods, which include the pioneering use of creative project work. Our aim is to encourage you to learn interactively and gain hands-on experience. We take pride in inspiring our future world-changing engineers.

Postgraduate study

Postgraduate study

We offer a range of programmes at postgraduate level. Our Masters degrees enable you to develop your technical and professional skills to an advanced level whilst providing an opportunity to apply your previously taught abilities to real problems. Alternatively, you may choose to undertake a postgraduate research degree that will involve collaborating with academic staff, or go into PhD study where you will be expected to pursue structured research into a definite area of engineering in which the Department has expertise.

World-class research

World-class research

Our research was rated as world-leading in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF). 91% of our research and 100% of our impact in the General Engineering area was assessed as being internationally excellent and world-leading, a distinction that is also given to our environment. Lancaster is amongst a select few universities to have achieved these gold standards in both research environment and impact. The research that we undertake spans a wide range of interests and receives an average annual research income.

State-of-the-art environment

Our brand new Engineering Building has been purpose-built to accommodate the interdisciplinary nature of the subject. By combining its modern facilities with our world-class teaching and research, we aim to prepare and inspire the next generation of engineering talent.

The building itself boasts cutting-edge facilities used for multidiscipline engineering, which includes specially designed workshops and laboratories, housed in a high-quality and attractive working environment. Our students possess the advantage of being equipped to work in a variety of ways outside of the traditional learning environment which enhances the quality of their experience.

Friendly atmosphere

Our friendly, informal and collaborative atmosphere helps those who work and study here to achieve success. We keep class sizes relatively small to avoid overcrowding of facilities or queuing to use the labs, and also to ensure that you are treated as an individual and not a number. During your time here, you'll be given the opportunity to get to know your lecturers and support staff personally. Additionally, it's useful to know that our 'open door' policy welcomes students to call in for help and advice at any time, and our lab technicians are happy to assist with practical and project work.
