Continuing from last month’s fantastic results in the Complete University Guide tables, Engineering has once again ranked among the best in the UK with subjects in the top ten of the Guardian league tables.

The Engineering Department has seen double success with Mechanical Engineering ranked 3rd in the UK and Chemical Engineering ranked 9th place. Mechanical Engineering has also been rated joint 1st in the UK for employment prospects and 3rd for student satisfaction with teaching.

The Head of Engineering Department Professor Claudio Paoloni commented: “I am very grateful to academic and professional staff for their commitment to offering our students an exciting learning experience and the highest standard of qualification in Mechanical Engineering, a key UK economic sector. Our position in the Guardian league table reflects our efforts to support our students in building a successful, rewarding career.”

Lancaster Environment Centre (LEC) and the Physics Department has also gained top ten success in this year's tables.

Professor Peter Atkinson, Dean of the Faculty, said: “I am delighted to see the continued success of the Faculty and its seven Departments as part of the University’s overall top 10 position. Engineering continues to be a top-rated Department across multiple metrics, with Mechanical Engineering ranked 3rd in the UK. It is particularly pleasing to see Physics and LEC ranked in the top 5 in the UK overall, reflecting the very high quality of the offer. These successes are testament to the focus that our staff give to students, their experience and their employment.”

Overall, the University has been ranked in 9th place, maintaining its ‘triple top ten’ status in all three major league UK league tables.

The Guardian tables boast a ‘sophisticated indexing methodology that tracks students from enrolment to graduation,’ and uses eight criteria. These are:

  • Entry score
  • Feedback
  • Job prospects
  • Overall quality
  • Spending per student
  • Staff/student ratio
  • Teaching quality
  • Value added
