How to Apply for Postgraduate English Literature Degrees

To apply for a postgraduate place at Lancaster University, you should use our Postgraduate Admissions Portal. You will be able to upload whatever supporting documents you have, directly into the system.

How to Apply for Postgraduate Creative Writing

Creative Writing MA Applications (Campus and Distance)

A first degree is normally a pre-requisite for entry onto the MA course, though this can be in any subject. You will be asked to give details of your academic background, work experience, and an outline of what you hope to achieve on the MA. You will also be asked to supply references.  The application form should be returned with the following:

  • references
  • an authorised copy of your degree transcript
  • a short CV
  • a covering letter
  • a sample of creative work (no more than 12 poems or 20 pages of prose/scriptwriting) 

Applying PhD in Creative Writing 

Potential candidates for the PhD in Creative Writing should be experienced writers and will usually hold an MA in Creative Writing or other relevant subject at Merit or Distinction level and/or publications in book form or in literary magazines or anthologies. Candidates should have an original proposal for research which will include research questions relating to both the creative and critical components of the proposal.

Information about applying to our Postgraduate Creative Writing courses can be obtained by contacting the course officer or one of the course convenors.

Applicants wishing to be considered for Departmental or Faculty funding need to already have accepted a place on the MA programme of their choice by March. All applicants should bear in mind that we recruit the bulk of our intake by the end of April each year, though we will consider applications after that date if we have vacancies. We operate a reserve list scheme and we also operate a deposit scheme to secure enrolments.

English Language Requirements

Overall IELTS of 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 in each element.
