Specialist Research and Discussion Groups

Contemporary Gothic reading group

The Contemporary Gothic Reading Group has been running since 2008.

We meet regularly during term-time for relaxed and informal discussion of recently published Gothic novels and short fiction. The 2014-15 programme included Jeremy Dyson’s The Haunted Book, Helen Oyeyemi’s Boy, Snow, Bird and Kate Horsley’s The Monster’s Wife.

We also occasionally invite authors to join us – Jenn Ashworth and Richard Hirst discussing the Curious Tales project and their love of ghost story writer Robert Aickman was a recent highlight. Staff and postgraduate students across the university are warmly welcome to attend: no previous knowledge of Gothic is required!

Upcoming Gothic reading group events:

Week 8 (Tuesday 29th November) 12-1.30, County MR1: Ines Gregori Labarta, McTavish Manor

Week 24 (Tuesday 16th May) 4-4:50pm County Main MR1: Jenn Ashworth, Fell

Please contact Dr Catherine Spooner for more information or to join the mailing list.
