Abstract: This mixed–method research seeks to understand the basis of consumer behaviours when enrolling with third–party apps that require consumers to provide the apps with access to their financial data in order to provide useful financial services.

The study begins by examining the extent to which consumers read and understand the terms and conditions of any apps that they use. It then explores whether this changes in the specific case of apps that need access to consumers’ financial data. Through interviews and focus groups with 50 consumers of these apps, the research identifies the expectations these consumers have about how their financial data will be used and why they expect to be treated fairly by the third–party app providers. The paper ends with specific recommendations for improving the experience of sharing data with app providers.
