Professor Peter Diggle, Distinguished Professor in the Faculty of Health and Medicine at Lancaster, has been confirmed as President-elect of the Royal Statistical Society. He will take up the post on 1st January 2015 for a period of two years.

Professor Diggle was Professor of Statistics in the department from 1988 to 1997, prior to his founding of the research group CHICAS (Combining Health Information, Computation and Statistics) in the Faculty of Health and Medicine. In addition to holding a Distinguished Professorship at Lancaster, he is also professor at the Department of Epidemiology and Population Health, University of Liverpool. In 1997 he received the Royal Statistical Society's Guy Medal in Silver.

Peter said he was 'honoured' to be nominated. 'The Society has played an important part in my career throughout the past 40 years,' he said. 'I have learned much and made many friends at RSS meetings and conferences.'

He continued: 'With the honour comes daunting responsibility. However, I know that as president, I can rely on first-class support from both the staff and the membership. I particularly hope that I will be able to contribute to the Society's support for early-career statisticians, and for statisticians working in developing country settings where resources that we take for granted in the UK are usually lacking.'
