STS/GWS Admixtures Seminar Series: Enactments of theory and practice

Date: 19 February 2014 Time: 2.00-3.00 pm

Venue: FASS MR 5

Anne Katrine Kamstrup, Ph.D. fellow, Department of education, University of Aarhus.

My talk is about my Ph.D. project, which is an empirical study of professional education - mainly teacher education and engineering education - and on the problematic of theory and practice. The Ph.D. is part of a larger project called 'Bridging the gap between theory and practice in professional education'. The dichotomy between theory and practice in the title of the project makes it a challenge to work with the two terms as something different than separated. My empirical findings have prompted me to develop a different metaphor that can capture the fluidity between the terms that are the reality in the lives of my informants. Instead of building a bridge between the theory shore and the practice shore I work with a theorypractice sea. In the sea theory and practice are part of each other and a priori not separable, but the terms show up in different shapes as waves that we can recognize as theory and practice.
