Sociology at Lancaster University is ranked 1st in UK

Sociology at Lancaster University has been ranked 1st in the UK for research intensity in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF), recognizing its inclusive approach and world-leading research.

The REF measures the quality of research conducted in universities and other higher education institutions in the UK against international standards of excellence. The results of REF 2014 confirm the world-leading status of sociology at Lancaster, with 39% of its research classed as 'world-leading'.

Lancaster Sociology was rated particularly highly for the relevance of its research to wider society. It was ranked was classed as joint second for the impact of its sociology research, with 80% of its research impact being classed as world-leading.

Sociology at Lancaster is thriving, with 29 academic staff, 13 research associates and 86 Doctoral students. Lancaster Sociology excels in a range of interdisciplinary and postdisciplinary areas such as science and technology studies, mobility, environment, gender, social work, health and disability. It has nine research centres, including DEMAND, an ESRC/EPSRC-funded research centre studying the social aspects of energy demand which also receives support from ECLEER (EDF R&D), Transport for London and the International Energy Agency.

The Department's three undergraduate degrees - BA Sociology, BA Media and Cultural Studies, BA Social Work - are all ranked in the top twelve in the UK by the Complete University Guide.

Dr Bronislaw Szerszynski, Head of the Department of Sociology, said 'at Lancaster we do sociology that is both theoretically innovative and engaged with the wider world - it is great to see the quality of what we do recognised in REF 2014'.

Professor Simon Guy, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, said 'at Lancaster University we are committed to generating knowledge that inspires and matters globally, and to engaging and influencing beyond the University, so we are delighted that our innovative work in Sociology has been recognised as world leading'.

Over all subjects assessed, Lancaster University is ranked 13th for the percentage of world-leading research out of the 128 institutions listed and 18th in the UK overall.
