The dynamics of knowledge creation

Mary Hamilton (Educational Research) together with David Barton and Karin Tusting (Linguistics) have been funded by the ESRC for a two-year project on "The dynamics of knowledge creation: academics' writing practices in the contemporary university workplace". The grant is worth approximately £400,000 and will start on January 1st 2015.

The proposed study aims to understand how knowledge is produced, shaped and distributed through the writing practices of academics in a range of disciplines and at different career stages within the English HE system. It will use a mixture of interview, observation and documentary methods to examine how textual practices are changing, and how those changes are being managed and experienced. It takes a workplace perspective on academics writing, including scholarly research, administrative and service related activities and collaborations.

The research will inform ideas about how the mission of the university sector can best be supported and developed in challenging times. Demands for greater accountability, increasing numbers of students, the physical re-organization of space/time in the HE workplace, changes in technologies and the understanding of academics' roles are all transforming the contexts in which academics write.
