The Roles of Education and Educational Research in Promoting Social Justice - Charles Clarke

In this session Charles Clarke will discuss the roles of education and educational research in promoting social justice, with a focus on one or more current, key social justice issues in education. Within this, he will focus on:

  • whether and how we can address these social justice issues through education;
  • the importance of educational research in this process;
  • how educational researchers can more effectively influence government policies.

About Charles Clarke

Charles Clarke is currently a visiting professor in the Department of Politics, Philosophy and Religion at Lancaster University. During his time as a member of the Labour Government he became Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for School Standards in July 1998. In July 1999 he was appointed Minister of State at the Home Office, with particular responsibility for the police. After the 2001 General Election he joined the Cabinet as Labour Party Chair and Minister without portfolio. He was appointed Secretary of State for Education and Skills in October 2002, and then in December 2004 Home Secretary; he left the Home Office in May 2006 and returned to the backbenches.
