Raking up the past of academic work

This seminar reviews a study currently in progress, which attempts to combine a sociomaterial sensibility with methods borrowed from oral history and visual sociology. I am interested in exploring the value of a sociomaterial perspective (Fenwick et al, 2011) in understanding how academic work is negotiated, experienced and enacted both within universities and within disciplinary communities, by academics and by other actors. At the same time I want to build a more nuanced picture of historical change in the daily experience of academic work over the past 40 years (Tight, 2010) - in effect, reconstructing the experience of work from a distance in time. The focus here will be on this 'recent-historical' strand of the study, illustrating how methodological choices have played out in the practice of conducting the research, and considering the value of the data generated.
