Thesis Working Title

An exploration of the role of essay writing in the lives of student learners: Theorising undergraduate students' learner identities.

Research Interests

Students' relationships with and the development of their academic writing

Using a multi-methodological framework I am currently exploring the experiences of undergraduate students within the context of essay writing at university.Adopting a theoretical framework which draws on Socio-cultural theory, specifically Communities of Practice (Wenger, 1998) and Figured Worlds and Subject Positions (Holland et al., 1998), I intend to develop an argumentthat it is important to explore the relationship between undergraduate students' experiences of essay writing and the role that this plays in their lives as learners at university. In particular, how students become learners through their agency, participation and negotiation of the academic writing practice.
