Thesis Working Title

Student withdrawal and persistence in Initial Teacher Education

Research Interests

Initial Teacher Education

Primary Education

ICT in Education

My thesis aims to investigate why some students withdraw from programmes of Initial Teacher Education (4 year undergraduate primary and 1 year PGCE primary) in a particular institution and what might be done to reduce this level of withdrawal; and why some students persist in the face of difficulties. Key research questions are:

  1. Why do students on QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) programmes withdraw?
  2. What variability can be identified between undergraduate and postgraduate ITE programmes?
  3. What problems or issues are identified by persisting students, and how are these similar or different to those identified by withdrawing students?
  4. Where persisting students identify problems or issues that are similar to those identified by withdrawing students, what factors critically affect persistence?

Current Teaching

I am a distance learning student at Lancaster University and so undertake no teaching responsibilities. I do, however, undertake Link Tutor work for the University of Warwick, supporting local schools and students on PGCE placements.

Would like to meet

....anyone studying:student persistence and withdrawal in Higher Education. Of particular interest would be those researching professional programmes such as nurse education or teacher education.
