PhD community

The worldwide PhD community within the Department of Educational Research consists of over 200 students. This page highlights some of the co-operative learning and research intiatives within that PhD community.

All our PhD students are undertaking research which is aligned to one of the three research centres within the department:

Small group meetings

  • PhD workshopTraditional route PhD students have the opportunity to participate in informal monthly workshops on a variety of topics. Jo Warin is the Research Students' tutor; please contact her to join these workshops or set up other events for PhD students.
  • A student-organised literature group (open to students on and off campus) where academic members of staff and students discuss uses and interpretations of academic literature. Convenor: Caroline Tutton
  • A monthly peer-supported writing day for PhD students (run by an academic and open to students on and off campus) where students set their own writing goals for the day and then reflect on their progress. Convenor: Ann-Marie Houghton
  • Online reading group participantOnline reading group (open to staff and all students) where specific journal articles relating to educational research are discussed. Convenor: Rebecca Marsden

Doctoral programme cohort groups

Doctoral programme students are all part of cohorts based on their year of entry to the programmes. The students within these cohorts generally form strong, cohesive groups who support each other during and after their PhD studies.

FASS Research training programme

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Lancaster University runs a comprehensive research training programme for its students. Most of these courses are based on the Lancaster campus but some are available online.

Educational Research Departmental seminars

PhD students regularly contribute to, and attend (in person and online using video conferencing), the department's seminar series about a wide range of education issues.
