David Barton steps down as Director of the Literacy Research Centre

After 12 years as Director of the Lancaster Literacy Research Centre, David Barton is stepping down as Director. Julia Gillen is the new Director; Mary Hamilton and Uta Papen continue as Associate Directors.

The Literacy Research Group began in the early 1980s at Lancaster. It has been internationally known since its inception when Literacy Studies was in its infancy. Visitors to the Centre who have been noted collaborators in Literacy Studies have included Shirley Brice Heath, Mike Cole, Judith Green, Gunther Kress, Kenneth Levine, Jane Mace, Ron Scollon and Brian Street. Works by David Barton, many in collaboration with colleagues in the Literacy Research Centre including Mary Hamilton and Roz Ivanic, are acknowledged as shaping influences in the field over four decades. Since 2001 the Literacy Research Centre, based in the Department of Linguistics and English Language, has been a leading research centre; former students and research collaborators can be found all over the world.
