Study for a PhD

The Educational Research Department offers a portfolio of research led continuing professional development at doctoral level. We teach our PhDs in close association with our research centres.

Traditional route PhD - independent study

PhD/MPhil - by research through independent study (full-time or part-time).

We welcome proposals for full or part-time doctoral research in the Department's areas of research excellence.

Part Time Doctoral Programmes - PhD by Thesis and Coursework

Part-time, distance learning. These programmes are designed for graduates who want to study part-time whilst continuing to work. We offer PhD doctoral programmes in Higher education, Education and social justice, and E-research and technology enhanced learning.

Centre for Higher Education Research and Evaluation

PhD in Educational Research - Higher Education

The programme provides a well-defined and supported route to a PhD for professionals working in higher education institutions. It includes a module on the links between work and learning. Read more»

This programme has four residentials per year.

Centre for Social Justice and Wellbeing in Education

This new and unique programme is for professionals world-wide who are working to promote social justice in or through education (in its broadest sense). Read more»

PhD in E- Research and Technology Enhanced Learning

The programme is available to anyone in the world wishing to develop their e-learning research and practice, for example, learning technology professionals, educational developers and those interested in developing distance or blended learning in their courses. Read more»
