Distance Learning MA in Adult Literacy, Numeracy & ESOL

(The Department is not currently recruiting to the MA in Adult Literacy, Numeracy & ESOL)

Introduction

This programme has been introduced to meet the Continuing Professional Development needs of experienced professionals in Adult Literacy, Numeracy and ESOL (ALNE).

It offers a flexible opportunity for advanced training in Adult Literacy, Numeracy and the teaching of English to Adult Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). As a Masters in ALNE it will build on initial training qualifications in the field and enable practitioners to specialise in their particular area of experience and practice.

Our Expertise

At Lancaster we have a long-standing commitment to Adult Literacy, Numeracy and ESOL and a track record of innovative research and development. We will introduce you to a social practice view of literacy as rooted in a variety of contexts and cultures, and a participatory approach that emphasizes the links between research, teaching and learning. We offer a strong grounding in reflective research and evaluation. We can support you with expertise especially in language studies, workplace learning, community-based learning and prison contexts. By choosing to study with us you will join a thriving Literacy Research Centre, which is part of the DfES funded National Research and Development Centre in Adult Literacy and Numeracy. You will be working in an internationally renowned faculty of social science that places Literacy, Numeracy and ESOL in the wider social policy arena. We will enable you both to develop your own specialisms and link them to the wider picture.

Flexible Study

In developing this new course we have made it as flexible as possible to meet the needs of busy professionals. All modules can be taken as freestanding courses, carrying credit that can be put towards a variety of qualification. There is on-line support so you can study at a distance and at times convenient to you. Face-to-face sessions at the start of each module enable you to get to know tutors and other course participants. You are entitled to work directly with the library and other resources available on the Lancaster campus whenever you choose - offering you a quiet and pleasant environment to visit and study.

On-line Blended Learning

The course is a good way to de-mystify or to build on your knowledge of on-line learning. The experience of participating in the course is designed to suggest strategies you can use to work with your own students in the future using new technologies. We take an integrated approach, ensuring that students are fully supported in all aspects of their learning. We do not assume any prior knowledge of the online technology and we assist you to develop your knowledge of both the learning environment and other electronic resources. "Blended learning" encompasses a range of activities, materials and opportunities to discuss issues face-to-face and through the online forum. Tutor and peer discussion happens through a specifically designed virtual learning environment. Individual contact with members of the programme team is by e-mail or phone. We encourage you to visit the Lancaster campus whenever you can where you can use the study resources in the library and consult tutors face to face, for example, when working on your dissertation.

Finally, accreditation of prior learning and credit transfer is an important aim of our course - enabling you to map, reflect and build on your strengths and existing experience to formally up-date your qualifications in line with new standards in the field.

We are excited by the potential of new developments in the field of adult literacy, numeracy and ESOL and look forward to working with you, learning from you and sharing the resources and expertise we have to offer.
