About the Departments of Educational Research and Linguistics

Department of Educational Research

The Department of Educational Research is the administrative department for the Diploma Masters/ Diploma programme, while teaching is shared with the Department of Linguistics. Both departments are members of the Faculty of Social Sciences, and have been judged excellent for both teaching and research by national review panels.

Educational Research is one of only four departments in the country to have attained a Grade 5 in the last Research Assessment Exercise and 24/24 in the Quality Assurance Agency's subject review. In addition to excellent teaching and research we place considerable emphasis on linking professional practice to existing research, sound theorising and methodology. Post-graduate study in the department provides opportunities for both professional and academic development based on an innovative research culture.

Department of English and English Language

The Department of Linguistics and English Language is one of the largest and internationally best-known centres in Britain for teaching, advanced study and research in Linguistics, the study of language in general, and the English language in particular. We are a friendly and flexible community of teachers and researchers who provide a high standard of education for our students. Our Department is highly rated both for teaching and research. In 2001 we received the highest rating (5 out of 5) in the National Research Assessment and 23 out of 24 in the Teaching Quality Assessment exercises. This placed us in the top five of all the UK's departments of linguistics, ahead of 19 other departments. All teaching staff are actively engaged in research which informs their teaching. New ideas and developments feed directly into what our students learn. The students in our department are a culturally and linguistically diverse group of people of different ages and background and we believe that this diversity of languages and cultures is one of our most important resources.

Lancaster Literacy Research Centre

Since 1983 the Literacy Research Group at Lancaster has worked to understand the role of literacy in all areas of social life and to improve communication and collaboration between researchers and educational practice. The Literacy Research Centre will continue these activities building on its international reputation; linking research and practice; developing training opportunities and working with a range of funders and users. We are a major partner in the National Research and Development Centre for Adult Literacy and Numeracy funded by the Department for Education and Skills. We have research projects exploring the linking of ALNE policy and evaluating the Skills for Life strategy. We continue to develop theory and methodology, locating literacy research in the social sciences and building new partnerships across disciplines at Lancaster.
