Programme Structure

Aims and Objectives

As part of its general development of staff qualifications and career pathways in FE the DfES encouraged the development of new university based courses, including a range of post-graduate qualifications in ALNE.

The Lancaster qualifications are aimed at experienced teachers of Adult Literacy, Numeracy and ESOL. They offer a flexible opportunity for advanced training in ALNE and the teaching of English to speakers of other languages. These postgraduate modules in ALNE build on students' initial training qualifications in the field, enable practitioners to specialise in their particular area of expertise and practice, and explore the relationship between theory, research and practice in the professional field.

These qualifications contribute to a recognised pathway for tutors moving from initial qualifications in ALNE. Some modules have been written with the LLUK (formally FEnto) requirements for practitioners in mind, highlighting the importance of domain wide knowledge, reflective practice, critical understanding and scholarship. Some modules include Level 4 subject specifications.

All modules count towards the 30 hour CPD requirement.

Structure

The programme is modular and each module involves a mandatory 1½ day face-to-face induction, normally held on a Friday afternoon and all day Saturday at Lancaster University as well as independent study. This is followed by further study using email and the Internet.

On completion of the modules students undertake an institution based study or dissertation. Course participants decide a study plan suited to their personal interests and needs, in consultation with one of the course tutors.

The programme provides a fully supported and flexible entry into post-graduate study, which can be built on in a number of directions including professional areas adjacent to ALNE.
