Diploma in Educational Studies

The Diploma in Educational Studies is designed for those students who want to:

  • extend their subject knowledge of education
  • acquire research skills in the field of education
  • put their skills into practice in guided, independent, small-scale study

To complete the Diploma in Education you need to take the equivalent of 6 modules overall. You must take EDS 801 Introduction to Educational Research and Evaluation. You will need to choose a further three modules from:

  • EDS 811 Management in Education
  • EDS 812 Policy Analysis
  • EDS 813 Teaching and Learning in Educational Settings
  • EDS 814 Engendered Education

You will also need to complete a shorter dissertation of 8,000-15,000 words. One way of approaching this is to treat the dissertation as two combined Self-Directed studies, ie:

  • EDS 808a Self Directed Study
  • EDS 808b Self Directed Study

Diploma students are encouraged to take the opportunity of using their developing research and evaluation skills in their professional life, and a number use their dissertation as a means of developing and evaluating research and intervention projects within their place of work. Many students find that investigating an on-going concern in their own institution is an excellent way of combining the demands of work and study.

Transfer to the MA in Education

Diploma students can, on satisfactory completion, transfer to the MA in Education programme. Please speak to the MA Director for details
