MA in Educational Research

The MA in Educational Research is designed to extend students' understanding of social research design and method both generally and in relation to specialist areas, and to develop their ability to analyse and research educational issues in professional and academic practice. Although it shares many features of the MA in Education, it is specifically designed as research training for those students who would like to move on to PhD study, or those who want to develop enhanced research skills and methodological understanding applicable to a variety of careers in research and development.

To complete the MA in Educational Research programme you need to take 6 modules and a 3 unit dissertation. EDS 801 Introduction to Educational Research and Evaluation and FASS512 Basic Skills in Social Data Analysis are compulsory, as is EDS 808 Self Directed Study. You will need to choose a further three modules from:

  • EDS 811 Understanding Educational Change Management
  • EDS 812 Policy Analysis in Education
  • EDS 813 Contemporary Issues in Learning Teaching and Assessment
  • EDS 814 Engendered Education

Students without previous experience of statistical or mathematical concepts are required to complete the two introductory half-modules FASS508 and FASS509 Elementary Data Analysis and Computing for Social Research. Although performance on these modules does not contribute to the final award of a Masters Degree, they provide students with the necessary basis for FASS512 Basic Skills in Social Data Analysis.

Moving on to a research degree?

The MA in Educational Research is specially designed not only for students who want to develop their research skills but also for those who want to prepare for a research degree. We will help you do this, largely through your dissertation, although the process begins with your Self-Directed Study. Although it will be a self-contained piece of research, your dissertation will take the shape of an extended research proposal which can be used as a basis for moving on to registering for an MPhil/PhD degree. We will assist you, where appropriate, in seeking Economic and Social Research Council funding. For more information on ESRC funding, please see the Department's web pages at http://www.lancs.ac.uk/fass/edres/study/postgrad/funding.htm

The FASS Research Students Training Programme

The MA in Educational Research draws on the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Training programme which offers a range of courses, primarily aimed at research students. If you move on to further research degree level study you will need to take a selection of these courses. You can see the full list at http://www.lancs.ac.uk/fass/gradschool/training/
