EDS 800: Dissertation

Convenor: MA Director

Dissertations can be either 'library-based' or empirical. They are usually the final piece of work that students complete and, as such, represent the most advanced and sophisticated piece of educational research that students undertake on the course.

The dissertation is a chance for students to investigate in depth a topic of their choice with guidance from an experienced researcher from the Department. The length of the Dissertation gives students the scope to develop an in-depth study of an area of education that they are interested in. A basic aim of the MA is that students should be able to identify research questions, research the existing literature on a topic, and design a suitable research programme. For many students, this will be a case of reflecting on issues arising in their own area of professional practice and may include research or evaluation in their own institution. For others, the choice of topic will reflect identification and analysis of a conceptual problem arising from the existing research. The Dissertation is an excellent opportunity for students to exercise and develop their research skills in a supported environment.
