EDS 808: Self-Directed Study

Convenor: MA Director

Word length: Approx 5000

The Self Directed Study is a chance to investigate in depth a topic of your choice with guidance from an experienced researcher from the Department. Recent topics for Self Directed Studies are listed below but we have supervised topics in most areas of Education.

Your SDS will either be "library based" or empirical. A library based study might involve reviewing the literature on an issue of relevance in order to draw together existing knowledge (for example on approaches to developing numeracy, improving standards of behaviour in schools or dealing with disaffected or high-attaining pupils). Alternatively it might consist of a critical analysis of some established practice or view of education. Empirical studies involve gathering evidence "from the field". There is an enormous range of possibilities here. The taught module 'EDS801: Introduction to Educational Research and Evaluation' is designed to provide you with some of the tools you will need to carry out empirical studies and will also alert you to the range of approaches possible.
