ED.S 811 Understanding Educational Change Management

Convenor: Murray Saunders
Team Taught

This module aims to introduce participants to the cultural and organisational features of development and management of change in learning environments. During the process of studying the module students will be introduced to some of the organisational and cultural features of the planning, development and management of educational institutions and other formal or semi-formal learning environments. It intends to increase participants' awareness of the ways in which change affects, and can be managed in, educational settings. This will involve acquiring both practical and theoretical understandings of the management of change and evaluating and applying different models of change to educational organisations. (intellectual, subject professional). An important aim is to encourage participants to reflect upon the kinds of change strategies they would wish to adopt in the future and to better understand the consequences of such strategies for those who work and study with them (subject professional, affective).Participants will explore various meanings of the term 'culture' and assess its use in studying change processes.

Though many participants will have some practical experience of working in an educational or training setting, the module may also be taken by those without such experience. The module will involve practical as well as theoretical study of managing change. It will use a variety of methods, from lectures and group discussions to role-play and simulations. Participants will be encouraged to draw on their own personal experiences and existing skills and knowledge where possible. Both group and individual work will be a feature of the module.

Assessment

Assessment is by means of two pieces of coursework: (1) a 'cultural audit' of an educational organisation in relation to an aspect of change in that organisation, or a critical examination of the persuasiveness of different concepts of institutional change, and (2) either: a 'consultant's report' on how to foster change in some aspect of governance, diversity management, teachers' cultures or more general organisational cultures in any sector of education, or: a critical assessment of an account or evaluation of an institutional change process using key concepts from the module.
