The Department is not currently recruiting to the certificate, diploma and masters courses in Education or Educational Research. How We TeachLectures, presentations, and discussion are a primary means of teaching on the MA courses. Course tutors use lectures to introduce themes, approaches, and theories, which are then discussed by students in small groups. Students are provided with pre-readings for each MA session that are used as the basis for further discussions in the sessions. Drawing on students' educational knowledge and experiences is an essential part of the approach to teaching and learning on the MA course.
Seminars and workshops are used in a variety of ways: student-led presentations; student or tutor-led discussions; textually-based discussions; other organised activities such as debates, writing exercises, project work, or problem-based learning. Practical training sessions using computer labs, data resources, and other methodological tools are used in the Academic Practices Module and the FASS Research Training Programme. Independent learning (i.e., self-directed research, participating in the department's research culture, reading groups, email discussion lists, use of library and web resources) is an integral part of the learning experience for Masters' students. The MA dissertation, which comprises a third of the overall assessment, enables students to demonstrate their ability to design and carry out independent research drawing on appropriate methods of social enquiry. It gives the student practical first-hand experience in applying the principles of research design and carrying out research using some of the techniques of data collection and analysis learned in the research training modules |
